In 1980 I was $30,000 in debt, living in Montreal with my world shrinking rather quickly. My best friend and my girlfriend were both living in Toronto 500 kilometers away and my brother was teaching dance in Eleuthera. In July of 1980, I moved to Toronto looking for a new life and a better opportunity. After trying some small businesses on my own that didn't work, I answered an ad that read,
"$100 a day plus travel"
Now I have always been a pretty positive person coming from a pretty positive family, so when it turned out to be sales with an opportunity to grow into your own business, I was very excited. Everything that I was taught was all about Positive Mental Attitude. I was taught to visualize my goals, write down my goals, and keep a smile on my face all day long. All my life energy began going into where I go with this business. I used that great attitude to deal with approximately 200 customers a day, all cold calls from which I made about $100 per day while training 3-5 people to build my crew that would eventually be the opening of my own office.
I accomplished opening that office in 6 months and opened with 15 great guys that believed in me. By this time we had a new product that I absolutely loved. As an office we began moving over 1000 pictures a week and never looked back. I was now in a position to put the guys that believed in me into their own business and we began to expand as an organization throughout Canada. At this point, I was still working under the original american company Wholesale Merchandising Industries out of Atlanta, Georgia. Around this time I was approached by another office owner working for the Canadian Subsidiary Wholesale Marketing of Canada. We became partners while still working under the american company umbrella and expanded our artwork offices across Canada.
We broke all kinds of company records, received all kinds of trophies and were featured on the front cover of the company bulletin 3 times in one year. Because of the strength of our organization and our incredible sales, we were able to cut a new deal with the american company that enabled us to make a half of a million dollars over the next 12 months.
A year later because of their customs and revenue Canada problems which amounted to approximately 4 million dollars with fines, we were forced to separate from that company. Now please remember up until this point many people told me I was crazy, that they were using me, and that this opportunity would never work out. This was to be my biggest test. I didn't know why this was happening, why the rug was being pulled out from under me, I somehow knew not to judge it for good or bad, but that somehow things were happening for a higher purpose.
Then came the birth of Wholesale Warehousing Industries. For the first time, we would have to finance ourselves. With 13 offices across Canada, we would need new merchandise and a lot of hard work. Through my fathers connection to importers in Montreal, we were able to create a line of novelty items that we hoped and prayed would move.
I hit the road with five guys, first stop Edmonton. There we were greeted well, treated well, and absolutely blew everyone's mind with the numbers we did.
Our job was done on Wednesday and I told them if by Friday they did 3,000 pieces I would be back to get pied in the face, and off we went to Calgary to do the same. Calgary was as good if not better. I got pied in the face in Edmonton, and the following week we opened in Vancouver. It's the trip that put Wholesale Warehousing Industries on the map. Something funny about my business, in order for it to keep growing you need more population. So after covering Canada for a year we had no choice but to expand to the United States! Of course we were told in Canada that we were big fish in a small pond, and in the United States we would be small fish in a big pond and the two places you don't want to go were New York and Los Angeles.
In 1984-1985 we opened up in Los Angeles. Now by this point we had cleaned up
the business and truly made an equal opportunity for everyone. This meant going head to head with the american company, WMI, that had originally taught me the business. They got very desperate and did some crazy things and were out of business in two years. Imagine a company that had over 350 offices in the U.S. out of business. We really felt we had no competition at this point, so we expanded our product lines and opened multiple offices in every major city in America. Now it's important to remember, it's seven years in the business and although we have expanded and are doing very well, I'm still running an office on a daily basis.
I'm working with approximately 50 people in the office full time, teaching them the business and interviewing 60-100 people a day. I mention this because of the great amount of knowledge I learned about the law of attraction by observing people wanting specific goals. I have watched people with no talent become millionaires and retire in 15 years and I have seen people with great talent fail miserably because they know it all and have a shortcut for everything. Over 20 years in the business, I watched over 250 people become millionaires as well as watching many people who saw no success and blamed me, the business, their manager, or whoever. Now of course "The Secret" clearly explains why, but very few people in a business situation are willing to take responsibility for their thoughts and actions. It is through this experience over 27 years that I developed the DreamCatchers Anonymous concept and 12 Step Program.
Now its the year 1987 and I've set my sights on marriage and a family and I am pursuing the love of my life who is a model/actress. Man you talk about visualizing. We were married a year later and after being told my wife could not have children along came the miracle baby, my son, Tyler. Also, at this time the company had began its global expansion. I have traveled to Mexico and Australia to see our company flourish in both economies. This truly is a great opportunity. By traveling to other countries, I clearly see that one mans garbage is another mans fortune. It's all about perception.
At this point I have learnt so much about the law of attraction, my numerous talks and lectures in front of thousands of people became centered around it.
I felt I had climbed so high up this ladder that I was now working for the Universe rather than it for me. I found myself getting more and more spiritual while those around me seemed to get greedier and greedier. Because of these negative forces, and the birth of my son, for the first time I decided to stop running an office in order to spend more time with my family and travel to other countries and visit our offices and motivate the guys.
Over the next seven years that's exactly what I did while my partner opened thousands of offices all around the world. The company was now called DS-MAX and was huge. One of my proudest memories is our company being in South Africa while apartheid was still in place.
We were offering opportunity to average people and at the rally I attended there it was beautiful to see about 4,000 people, half black and half white, all dancing together and excited about a common goal. In 1997, I came out of retirement and hosted a huge rally in Long Island, New York at the Nasa County Coliseum. Approximately 10,000 people attended from all over the world. It was especially great to see about 20 guys from Poland, middle-aged, wearing their first new suit, and taking the first airplane trip of their life, so excited to visit America. When I realized Bill Cosby and Michael Buffer were working for us that night, it came to me just how big and blessed we had become.
Well it was back to work for me doing what I do best. I helped build a new division called Cydcor that would sell services instead of products. By representing fortune 500 companies in customer acquisition, we created a new division and a new network of communication offices. A company that recently sold for over 100 million dollars. A network of 65 offices sprang up almost over night. It's interesting that at this time the motivational talks became more and more about the law of attraction and at a leaders meeting with 3,000 people in 1999 in Long Beach, CA, one of my last speeches before retiring, was almost all about the law of attraction, seven years before "The Secret".
I include my notes (.pdf) that produced a 45 minute speech. At this point in my life I was getting tired of people's application of the law of attraction only on abundance. In 2002, I retired for the second and last time, went through some personal problems and found myself wanting to motivate and help people. Because I've always motivated people that knew me within my company, I really didn't think I had anything to offer strangers. This is where The Secret helped me. The way it was explained leaves one with a sense of responsibility for ones current situation. After seeing the movie it became clear to me, the creation of Dreamcatchers Anonymous.
Twenty six years of experience teaching and observing people helped me quickly develop the 12 Step program, the ultimate visual aid, and the concept of a community of like-minded people working and putting energy together towards their goals.
May everyone be at peace, kind, humble, fulfilled, happy, grateful, healthy, prosperous and generous.
love and be loved. Most of all, may all beings see the goodness and beauty in everything. Have faith and
live life fully with an awe at the abundance of miracles available to us. We have the power to
create/manifest. All things are possible. We are all one. |
